The main skill areas in our Department are represented by:
- Brest cancer surgery, particularly for sub-clinical lesions (i.e.: localized micro-calcifications and/or parenchymal distortions) with the possibility to perform the sentinel lymph node dissection (using Technetium 99 and a gamma ray detector) or a subcutaneous skin or nipple sparing mastectomy with a simultaneous application of a sub-pectoral muscle expander for multicenter/multifocal lesions.
- Extended pelvic surgery with lymphadenectomy (i.e.: radical hysterectomy according to Piver-Rutledge classification) for invasive uterine tumors arising from both cervical and endometrial tissues.
- Abdominal/pelvic staging and debulking of ovarian cancer.
- Electrosurgical excision procedure with loop electrode (LEEP) of preinvasive lesions of uterine cervix.
- Operative hysteroscopy and laparoscopy for myomas, polyps and pelvic endometriosis/adenomyosis.
The leading research fields are:
- To study the pathological features and the following clinical behavior after surgery of the previously described tumors.
- The investigation of the metabolic/bone changes in menopause and during the use of several hormonal replacement therapies.
- Endocrine, clotting and lipid systems during the “pill” intake for both contraceptive and therapeutic purposes (i.e.: polycystic ovary disease) .
- Alternative therapeutic approaches in stage III-IV of pelvic endometriosis.
